Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrats have given their unqualified and unanimous support to Swansea’s bid to become the UK City of Culture 2021.
Party members backed the bid at their General Meeting this month after hearing that winning will bring millions of pounds of extra investment into the City.
Newly elected Swansea and Gower Lib Dem Chair, James McGettrick said: “The City of Culture status is one that was pursued when the Liberal Democrats were leading the council. Each time we have tried we have come closer to winning and I am hopeful that we can do it this time.
“The benefits of winning this bid are enormous. In Hull, the current city of culture, it is estimated that 9 in 10 residents have experienced at least one event, with projects and art installations throughout the city. Hull has received an extra £1 billion of investment as a result of being announced the winner, which will benefit that city for years to come. We need a piece of that action. Bringing the City of Culture to Swansea would put us on the map and would attract millions of visitors to our beautiful home. Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrats are proud of our city and proud to support Swansea2021.”
