Below is a statement from Chris Holley, Leader of the Swansea and Gower Liberal Democrats Council group:-
The very upsetting news that Swansea and south west Wales is to lose 800 jobs is a body blow to our city.
This is a very clear result of a failure from both London and Cardiff to invest in our region, and to show that our city counts.
The stopping of the upgrading of the railway line, the failure of any form of commitment to build the lagoon, and the lack of any form of enterprise zones for our area shows that neither governments are concerned about any job creation in our area.
The call centre industry say that they see a 6% increase across the board in the U.K. So why then are we seeing job losses in Swansea and job increases in other parts of the U.K?
Both governments should be asking Virgin for a detailed explanation why they are closing here in Wales. At the same time they should look at adjusting business rates to help with job retention in our city.
